Some colours and effects cannot be achieved in a single coat of paint. Think of metallics, anodics, fluorescent and other complex colours. In those cases, we work with what we call a 2-coat system. In a 2-coat system, two different layers of paint complement each other to achieve the desired final result.
1
The first layer: base layer
(basecoat 1C or colorcoat 2C)
1C refers to a paint without a hardener. In our 2C paints, a hardener is added, resulting in improved durability for outdoor applications.
The base layer provides: the colour.
Depending on the entered powder code or the desired product, the first layer consists of: a basecoat 1C or a colourcoat 2C.
2
The second layer: finishing layer
(topcoat or clearcoat)
A topcoat is often specifically developed for a certain colour, whereas a clearcoat is a universal varnish layer for multiple colours.
The finishing layer: fully realises the effect, determines the gloss level, and provides the necessary protection for the surface.
Note that you should always finish a 2C colour coat with a 2C clear coat. A 1C base coat can be finished with either a 1C or 2C clear coat. Both layers are essential for a proper result.
New product names:
what does it mean?
As two products are always required, this is also mentioned in the product name.
For example:
TOUCH UP SPRAY 2C COLORCOAT + TOPCOAT – 400 ML
This means that the colour requires the following:
• a first layer: colorcoat 2C
• a second layer: topcoat 2C
